Qualities of a Reliable Plastic Injection Molding

The technology that has been used over the decades for manufacturing plastic oriented products is the plastic injection molding process. This technology is applied for manufacturing of plastic bottles, plastic storage units and containers, bottle caps, furniture, key components for the manufacturing sector, automotive spares and even aerospace. The injection molding process is so comprehensive and versatile that it has made it possible to manufacture plastic related products/components of any desired shape and size.

It is a widely acknowledged fact that plastic injection molding process and CNC machinery has dramatically improved the art of making plastic goods. But, it has to be remembered that superior quality plastic molds have to be used in order to ensure high quality end products. Hence it is imperative that you find a reputed and reliable company that is experienced in customized plastic injection molding services.

The process of plastic injection molding is childishly simple. Plastic raw material (usually ABS, PET, PP, PS, PVC, Acrylic, HDPE, Kynar, and Radel) is heated at higher temperatures and melted in a hopper by the plastic injection machine. It is then injected into the molding cavity usually made out of either steel or aluminum. The cooling process is started once the molten plastic is entirely filled within the cavity and takes the shape of that of the mold. Once the solidification is done, the cavity is opened and the molded plastic is ejected with the help of pins.

The parameters for reliable plastic injection molding should include easy processing of wide array of plastic materials, minimum scrap loss, allowing for repeatability with scant wastage at stipulated tolerance levels, acceptable productivity rate and least possible labor. It is essential that you identify reliable plastic injection molds if you are using plastic components at your manufacturing site or selling finished plastic goods.

However, the fact remains that finding a genuine and reliable plastic injection molding service provider is difficult – though there is a proliferation of providers in the market today. With the huge demand for plastic injection molding products, there are various units dealing in the plastic machining today. In fact, the number of options is so mind-boggling that it becomes difficult for the user to find a reliable one. If you are really keen on finding a reliable plastic injection molding service provider, then you can try the online source.

Quality standards for injection molding are complex and also have a lot of variables and interactions that affect the way it runs. Choosing the right types of plastics raw materials in making plastic injection molding byproducts is critically important for cost effectiveness as well as to obtain quality products. This apart, a plastic injection molding service provider should be equipped to provide precision designs for perfect outcome. An efficient service provider should be able to apply stringent quality control test even during the manufacturing process.

Use the material manufacturers recommended melt temperature for process development and verify with a calibrated melt probe to check the plastic melt temperature. The injection speed should be adjusted accordingly to match the established nominal fill time. Retain the hold pressure that would give the part the desired cosmetic look and size.

All experienced plastic injection molding service providers offer specification assistance in terms of design and fabrication of custom inspection gauges, blueprints and packaging design. Most plastic molders also have the capacity to accept bulk orders for huge volumes that range from a few thousand to a few millions.

The Pros and Cons of Plastic Injection Molding

Plastic Injection Molding is one of the most common techniques of plastic molding. It is one of those techniques has have been used for a long time and have evolved over the years. The low operation cost of this method makes it one of the preferred choices of molding plastic. Also the simplicity of operation of this method makes the process easy to use and also makes sure that the product that is intended to be created can be created in the most simple of ways. Maintenance cost of this process is also relatively lesser than other complicated processes.

Let us take a look at the process of injection molding. There are few key components in injection molding. The starting of the process includes feeding plastic pellets into the hopper. This is to provide raw materials to the injection molding process. After the pellets are fed into the hopper they are crushed and heated to form the molten slag. This molten slag is fed at high pressure with the help of an injector into the die. The die is shaped like the object that is to be created. The molten slag of plastic will take the shape of the die and after it is cooled down it will solidify into the shape of the object. The key here is to inject the molten plastic at high pressure so that it fills up the shape of the die well. This is why this process is known as injection molding.

There are many advantages of injection molding over other processes of plastic molding. The first advantage would be the low cost of operation. Also the process is simple to make use of and there is no need of specialized workers to work with the process of injection molding. All that is really required is to feed the plastic pellets into the machine. The shape of the die is the next important requirement and if these two needs are taken care of then the rest of the process is almost automatic. Therefore such simplicity and low running cost of operation helps to produce plastic products in a bulk. This makes sure that you can take up a large number of projects. Complex parts made out of plastic can be easily produced by this process because of the very high pressure involved. This means complicated parts or parts with high detail can be produced. Also since the cycle volume is low, there can be a large number of parts made the numbers of which would run into millions.

There are a few disadvantages with this process also. Bottles that have large undercuts cannot be produced through this process. Also the mold cost is very high. Therefore to make it a profitable business a large number of parts have to be produced at a single go. Also even though the operation cost is low, the start up cost for the process is very high which would mean that you would need a good business order of high volume to actually make profits.
